BZIP2 is freely available, and a free invention patent (see below), and high-quality data compressor. It's usually compresses files to within 10% to 15% of the best available techniques (family ppm of statistical compressors), whilst being around twice as fast in the press and six times faster in relieving stress.
The code is organized as a library with programming interface. BZIP2 program itself is a client of the library. You can use to compress data in memory using algorithms BZIP2 library, or you can use in your own programs, directly to read and write .bz2 files.
